Apr. 11th, 2019 10:24 pmwhile I'm entirely readily a fan of sci fi movies like Men in Black, I'm also quite sure that the entire genre of stories involving The Good Guys Vs The Evil Aliens is like entirely tapping into contemporary cultural insecurities about being threatened by an outside presence, and defending the position that it's good and just and righteous to defend the homeland against this invasion. see: captain marvel and the stargate franchise in particular, on account of massive military support for and presence in media about the fight against aliens. come on, a war against illegal aliens, who look just like us but are Evil Somehow, where have we heard this lately. like there was the first wave as the cold war was thawing, here we are all over again, but it's not about being infiltrated by spies as much as it's paranoia against migrant and refugee populations. different flavors, still pie.
It just gets better when all of the superhero genre is about extrajudiciary / extragovenmental groups who somehow gain the right to be judge and jury all on their own, why are we surprised that they're so popular with, exactly the people who think they've got the right to be judge jury and even executioner

also the funniest thing about when the captain marvel trailers dropped, I was so sure there was something familiar about them, beyond the 90s flashbacks and generic action movie soundtracks, I knew there was something, some vibe I'd seen before

straight up, SG1 as a child and I got the air force bug lolololol
anyway
my dudes the other day I was pitching my foucault paper to my seminar professor, and I realised as I was saying something like "how america is really an oligarchy predicated on religion and racism, these days" that I was saying it to a woman who left Iran for Significant Reasons, and she was nodding along. like, she knows what she's talking about, in our class discussions of terror and totalitarianism. It's not fun to have context for these readings lmaoooooooooooo
