Classic Lit: When I was even littler than I still am today, I put up my first poster over my bed: a vulture droid from TPM. Not much later, I started trying to sneak downstairs to watch SG1 on our CRT. Apparently not too much has changed in my hindbrain since then. These are ones that showed me the breadth fic can reach.
Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left to Lose: SGA post-canon by
synecdochicHow do you pick up the threads of an old life? How do you go on, when in your heart you begin to understand... there is no going back? There are some things that time cannot mend. Some hurts that go too deep, that have taken hold.
Or: How Professor Rodney McKay Came Home
It’s been over a decade and this lives in me. It’s grown, really. McKay’s someone I feel like I could meet any day.
Written By The Victors (ao3): SGA meta-au by
cesperanzaThe one that blew me out of the water and proved to me that fic isn’t just something that lives in the depths of the internet; this is some of the straight-up best stuff out there. It feels longer than the wordcount, by dint of implicature and scope. Also, that's not a typo, this is the 15th work on ao3.
It also has a host of extras on the home site, including a few poems that haunt me.
Re-Entry: SW au series by flamethrower
Peggy stu Obi-Wan goes back to fix everything. Boi I hadn’t heard of this trope before and getting to jump into something so bold was a Trip to my tiny mind. Like. You can just do that to canon! Make it your own!! Turn it into something entirely your own!!! Viva fandom
Ouroboros: SW au series by bedlamsbard
God I want this to be published, Bedlam deserves so much credit. Wake the Storm caught my heart, and Queen’s Gambit is an actual novel. I’m gonna bind them into real books one of these days when I find a good printer situation.
Yes, the peggy stu premise is similar to re-entry, but the next step Bedlam took was reinventing the universe from the ground up. It’s unsettling in a beautiful way, and I can’t wait for the third installment.
Faves: Pick a day, any day, I would read these again
Cor et Cerebrum: Batfam series by Audreycritter
Do you wanna feel good? Do you want a family fic that’ll actually give you one? Do you love seeing real consequences to actions? Guess what: You’ll get it, and eat your cake too.
Semi-completed; the end’s there but not all the last pieces leading up to it. Foreign Object sets everything up, but Developmental Milestones is really where Audreycritter kicks into gear.
I’m not one for OCs, generally. But I Love Dr Dev, I want everything good for him.
Steve Rogers at 100: Celebrating Captain America on Film: meta-fic by
eleveninches, febricant, hellotailor, M_Leigh, neenya, tigrrmilkCollaboration and meta! Academia and analysis! Pure high-quality crack! I love everyone in this bar.
A Star to Steer By: SWxSG1 crossover by dogmatix, norcumi
So I was saying how star wars and stargate are my sci-fi foundation. This is my childhood meeting itself and avalanching down through to today
…..not today exactly; this is still set back in the day, and just pretend there’s someone decent in the white house
It’s a simple enough premise - Jack gets lost on a ship and meets the Jedi - but the attention to detail in fusing the universes is absolutely phenomenal. Every update, I re-read my way to the new chapter and savor it.
I have a pretty hard policy against reading things before they’re finished, so this is a bit of an outlier. I’m so glad I took a chance on it.
the last sentence: Discworld horror by oneinspats
Hoooooooooo boy but is this one special. Creeps me 100% out.
Every day maybe a hundred cows died for Ankh-Morpork. So did a flock of sheep and a herd of pigs, and the gods alone knew how many ducks, chickens, and geese. Flour? He'd heard it was eighty tons, and about the same amount of potatoes, and maybe twenty tons of herring. He didn't particularly want to know this kind of thing, but once you started having to sort out the everlasting traffic problem, these were the kind of facts that got handed to you.
Every day, forty thousand eggs were laid for the city. Every day, hundreds, thousands of carts and boats and barges converged on the city with fish and honey and oysters and olives and eels and lobsters. And then think of the horses dragging this stuff, and the windmills... and the wool coming in, too, every day, the cloth, the tobacco, the spices, the ore, the timber, the cheese, the coal, the fat, the tallow, the hay EVERY DAMN DAY…Ok. so. What happens when all that infrastructure runs up against an epidemic???
Very stylized; the better to scare the pants off you, my dear
The Hero's Journey; or: What Jasper Sitwell Did Last Summer: Epic Nonsense by pagination
Honestly what is this one. Hilarious, for one - I must know it by heart by now, but I always come back and crack right up.
In the author’s own words: “It's a ridiculous story, but so's the idea that Jasper Sitwell is Hydra.”
Stefon voice: This fic has everything: Glow Cloud. Vague, Yet Menacing, Totalitarian Terrorist Organizations. Hippopotamus Fat. Resurrections. Foot Locker. A Capella Choirs. Personality Testing.
Earth or Bust: The Martian continuation by sirtalen
Everything The Martian has to carry a thread of hopepunk by virtue of the source material. Some catch it better than others.
Hits my favorite stride of Actions Have Consequences
Eschaton: FFXV fix-it by nirejseki
Oh, hopepunk to the max. What do you do in the apocalypse? Buckle down and save the world, of course. There’s this gaping hole in canon, where the apocalypse falls and all we get is that our friends waited around for ten whole years for their hero to come back. Fuck that passivity. Society isn’t crumbling today, let’s reinvent our civilization and thrive.
New Contenders: latest and greatest!
Nocturne: FFXV au/fix-it/novel by nirejseki
Soft voice what the fuck, what is this, it’s amazing. You know what would be good for FFXV? Critical thinking skills for any of the characters, let’s give them that. Let’s give them agency, let’s build a world that’s so tightly coherent we can find a way to bend a prophecy into our own hands.
And did I mention that everyone’s a ‘taur? Like, centaur, tiger-taur, ibex-taur, etc. I honestly didn’t get it for a bit. But oh Boy does it pull through into something clever!
I wanna be Scientia when I grow up
Legacy: FFXV au/fix-it by ohmyfae
Alright, I haven’t actually read this one yet. But it’s a rewrite of the Imperial!Noct AU, which I really like. A main character who knows what he’s doing? Got that angst out of the way earlier and now we’re working on being a better person and taking responsibilities? Sign me Right up!
