So, I work at a candy store on the weekends. For a small chain, it's a neighborhoody sort of place; I either already know a few people who come in, or I've gotten to recognise a good number of regulars. It's retail, but nice like that.
Anyway, right now the store is decked to the nines in valentine's day decor, of course. there's heart boxes, and special seasonal confections, and a shelf of the red wrapping also decked in gold for lunar new year. I didn't know the store did that! I only started here after last 4th of july; I didn't know they had anything special for us! I mean, I'm one of the only two asian employees at our branch, and so our assistant manager didn't know not to put the red ribbons on some of our standard white boxes, but then corporate sent out a reminder not to put white in with the display, and she fixed it right away!
We've got another email from corporate taped behind our register carrels, under where anyone on the sales floor can see, clarifying our company policy not to speak to ICE, what to look for in suspicious questions, and giving a list of people up the food chain for us to contact if they do try to do a sweep on us. So yeah, corporate's lip service to the union means I have to jump through some extra hoops on that end. But you know what, this place has a few things going for it.
also, speaking of new year's - it's right around the corner! New year, new semester! is that auspicious? it feels appropriate, at least! So I need to pick up laisee for the chocolate coins I got from the store :) . again, I'm the only chinese person hired in that office and there's one other volunteer, so it's on me to celebrate at school. I'm the youngest hire, but I won't let a holiday pass by!
