Lovesick Falls - Julia Drake
Jan. 5th, 2026 10:11 pmRead Lovesick Falls by Julia Drake, a modern, queer YA retelling/remix of As You Like It in which best friends Celia, Ros, and Touchstone spend the summer working at an outdoor theater festival, navigating crushes and friendship drama. This one was slightly less my cup of tea than her first novel (The Last True Poets of the Sea, a modern YA take on Twelfth Night), mostly because of one major plotline in which main character Celia meets/befriends/briefly goes out with her celebrity crush Oliver, an actor on the endearingly bad TV show she and her friends are obsessed with, a trope I find so viscerally embarrassing it's fully a squick. (Like, people actually want to meet their celebrity crushes/idols/blorbos?! Can't relate.) Overall, I liked it a lot, though— more than I'd initially expected to when it seemed like it was taking more of a cutesy best summer ever! YA romance angle, because it was ultimately a bittersweet coming-of-age: ( ... ) As a retelling of As You Like It, specifically, Drake works in some fun nods to the original play, including a very grumpy cat named for the melancholy Jaques.

Jan. 5th, 2026 05:25 pmThis is the time of year when many will fall victim to predatory prognosticators, claiming to have the ability to foretell your fate in 2026. We recommend only consulting officially licensed prophets, seers, and fortunetellers, whose respective governing bodies monitor accuracy, timeliness, and ethical methodology. And remember, anyone who claims the future is both knowable and unchangeable has clearly never encountered even a basic temporal anomaly, so how much can they really know about the world around us?

snowflake challenge back on!
Jan. 5th, 2026 12:35 am:) happy to be back! as I recall, the snowflake challenge came around right when I first landed on DW, so it's great to roll up just in time again.
icebreaker / re-introduction: Hi! I'm Odense; I'm 30something, I like writing exchanges and I LOVE the 4th wall. I've been off the rink for a bit on account of the winter holidays crush, but I'm generally working on transitions these days. My concrete new year's resolution is to apply for jobs - lol it's not a super exciting resolution, but I think I need a change!
I'm doing the snowflake challenge to try and get back in the DW habit. I love the longer-format this space still encourages, and think it's only become more valuable as the internet at large pivots towards fast consumption. (Also, something's going on with LJ getting even shakier? sad to hear. another mark for DW's significance, though) I also really appreciate DW's privacy: I really hope I start to see more familiar names port over here from hrpf, this year! like, I used to have a fic rec blog, but I've fallen out of that habit. I might try to bring that back, under DW-lock this time :)?
