0denseIn light of how Godawful a certain class has been lately, I feel like I need to rant about something -
Whenever someone (white people) says that they want to move into a colorblind/race-less society, what they mean is that we'll treat everyone like white people, because white people are the highest standard of living. Let us erase that pesky distinction, and you, too, can be a person. Don't make us deal with you with regards to a racial identity; take advantage of our magnanimity, in this way we have chosen to deal with the issue we created.
And one one hand, yeah, there's an appeal to being offered the image of an even playing field. But it's not equitable, and this jump won't fix the problems we have. no, I don't care about your hypothetical examples; I know this is a fun thought game for you but it's our GD lives
And in any case, I don't want to live in that world. If you picked me up and dropped me down in a world without racial identity, I'd be very upset, because I don't want to let go of my racial identity. I don't want to be white.
I love being chinese-american! I love having this culture, and I'm so proud of having this history, it's wonderful! And, every issue that we've had to deal with as nonwhite people, comes from white people!
There is nothing appealing about your identity, my race is nothing I want to lose. Don't pretend this is a complement, when you're scrambling to find ways to stay on top of the pile you put is into in the first place.
also I know I'm using the word race a lot here, and in one sense ofc race doesn't exist, and what we call race-in-society might be better termed culture for the sake of recognizing the complexities of identity that phenotype doesn't account for - I know, I hear you, but even if social constructs may not have metaphysically status but they have got significant physical and epistemic influence and so after a certain point I don't care. White people invented race and now they're mad we're embracing it.
Also my position in this conversation about treating poc as white people is especially irksome, because I look Super White. I am already being offered the (interpersonal, not institutional) privileges they claim to want to extend. I know race is a bullshit concept because actual neonazis have assured me I 'look white enough'.
What the hell part of that makes me want to be proud of passing?????????????????????????????????????????
