:) happy to be back! as I recall, the snowflake challenge came around right when I first landed on DW, so it's great to roll up just in time again.

icebreaker / re-introduction: Hi! I'm Odense; I'm 30something, I like writing exchanges and I LOVE the 4th wall. I've been off the rink for a bit on account of the winter holidays crush, but I'm generally working on transitions these days. My concrete new year's resolution is to apply for jobs - lol it's not a super exciting resolution, but I think I need a change!

I'm doing the snowflake challenge to try and get back in the DW habit. I love the longer-format this space still encourages, and think it's only become more valuable as the internet at large pivots towards fast consumption. (Also, something's going on with LJ getting even shakier? sad to hear. another mark for DW's significance, though) I also really appreciate DW's privacy: I really hope I start to see more familiar names port over here from hrpf, this year! like, I used to have a fic rec blog, but I've fallen out of that habit. I might try to bring that back, under DW-lock this time :)?

>> happy to be back! <<

>> I like writing exchanges <<

[community profile] goals_on_dw has a list of Writing challenges among other things. Fannish 50 and Full Content on Dreamwidth have their own posts.

[community profile] allbingo posts a new fest each month; January is "Public Domain Day Bingo."

>>My concrete new year's resolution is to apply for jobs - lol it's not a super exciting resolution, but I think I need a change!<<

Go for it!

[community profile] goals_on_dw is doing weekly goal updates in January, monthly later in the year.

>> I love the longer-format this space still encourages, and think it's only become more valuable as the internet at large pivots towards fast consumption.<<

Agreed. I make a mix of short and long posts -- sometimes just a link, sometimes a longer essay or tutorial, often poetry. I also like arguing with articles.

>> (Also, something's going on with LJ getting even shakier? sad to hear. another mark for DW's significance, though) <<

Apparently LJ has shut down the ability of accounts to post or edit unless they meet certain qualifications. Mine still works, for now, but "shaky" is a good way to describe it.

>> also really appreciate DW's privacy: <<

Yeah, that's awesome.

>> I really hope I start to see more familiar names port over here from hrpf, <<

Dreamwidth Welcommittee has resources for encouraging folks to try DW and for supporting new users. By all means, invite your friends.

>> I used to have a fic rec blog, but I've fallen out of that habit. I might try to bring that back, <<

That's a great idea.

A big need right now is helping people find content on Dreamwidth, especially blogs that post full stories, fanart, meta, etc. here instead of just a link to an outside platform. The problem is that -- as we're seeing with LJ -- other platforms are rapidly becoming less reliable. Cohost closed and vanished. Many fansites over the years have too. Some platforms are members-only. Who wants to have 1269 different memberships, or can afford it as more sites monetize? So let's support the platform we love by reccing content that is right here where folks can see it.

Of course, if your fandom is all offsite, there are all the current rec communities that you could use for reccing those. [community profile] fancake has rotating themes. Some others specialize in a given fandom or other theme.

If you want to see what I'm doing, I've got a live Poetry Fishbowl on Jan. 6 with a theme of "Short Forms." Feel free to drop by, throw me prompts, or just watch the fun crosstalk among the audience.

>> omg THANK YOU this is such a helpful round-up! feels a bit like getting a map to the neighborhood <<

That's what I aim for. \o/

>>I'm sorry I missed the poetry slam, but these are all such great ideas to work along with.<<

There will be other opportunities. My next activity will be the [community profile] crowdfunding Creative Jam on Jan. 17-18 with a theme of "Memories." The next Poetry Fishbowl will be Tuesday, February 3 but we haven't picked a theme yet.

>>I'm totally on board re. more content on DW properly.<<

Yay!

>> I think there are some really great writing communities around, and this feels more like the place to tug at strings and re-work projects together.<<

Dreamwidth has many Writing communities. For reworking, you might like [community profile] betaplease.
